The Wedge

The Wedge is the first spot on the long beach of table bay, that is running from the harbour to Table View. Waves turn on the harbour wall and unite with the waves running a little deeper down in the bay, creating great peeks. Can be very hollow with sick barrels.

Milnerton

The wave gets smaller and smaller, the more you go into Table bay, since the swell has to turn around the city into the bay. When the south east is light or it is off-shore, you will sometimes find a clean and small wave, perfect for longboarding or making those sick turns on a shortboard.

Dolphin Beach

Dolphin Beach is the spot right next to the Dolphin Beach Hotel, that is on the Beachdrive right next to the city limits sign. Depending on the sandbars, waves can be clean. Greatest advantage: the line up is usually uncrowded!

Tableview

Tableview has a long beach. You will find a stony reef there, creating long rides, when there is a big swell, off-shore, light south east or calm winds.

In a small swell, it is a beach break. You have to look as the sandbars create different sections.

Milnerton Lighthouse

Smaller and cleaner waves than you'll expect to find at Sunset Beach. Perfect for beginners!

Big Bay

Big Bay is enclosed by two piles of stone and rock.
It is the most surfed spot in the Table bay and especially on weekends becomes really crowded. Big Bay is not working very often, but occasionally gets nice waves.

When the swell is huge, a long shoulder is running from the outside to the inner left bay. Most people feel comfortable here.

Kammer van 17

This spot is located on the right hand side of Big Bay. If everything is right, there is a smooth and long left, with sick sections. Works on low tide and calm or light south east winds.

Horse Trail

Horse Trails is located on the right of Big Bay between “Kammer van 17” and “Erste Steen”. You find a hollow beach break surfable as left or right. Horse Trails is better than it looks from the beach and works with every tide.

Derde Steen

Derde Steen is probably the best spot in table bay and also our favourite. In small to head high waves it creates different peaks with a fast and hollow left, that can be great for tube rides. The right is rather short, but still powerful…When there is a swell, waves break more to the outside, creating perfect A-frame peaks which are impressive in size.
These days...you better not miss’ em!!!

The spot does not work in much wind. It tends to become a serious paddling mission then. Prior seasons saw Derde’s working great on low tide or a rising tide but right now the falling tide seems to create the better waves.

Thermopylae

This is a pointbreak right in the city! Waves are breaking on the sunken ship "Thermopylae" and wrap around a nice reef then. Needs massive swells!

Rocklands

In big swell there is a left on an outside reef.

Queens

Queens is the most southerly city spot. Waves break as a lefty and works best in rising tide and big swell.

Glen Beach

Glen Beach used to be one of the best spots in Cape Town and has a great location, right at the jetset beach of Camps Bay. About 1,5 years ago, there was a short, powerful left breaking on sandbars, that have been washed away at the moment.

Llandudno

Llandudno today is probably the best and favourite city break. It is located in a beautiful bay, surrounded by massive rock. On the right hand side of the bay there is depending on the sandbars a peak named Gat. Gat has a fat lip and breaks hollow and powerful: Take off straight into the barrel, yeah!!!

In small swell the shorebreak forms a fast, hollow right in the middle of the bay and a left in the left of the bay. Llandudno is protected from the south east wind and is because of its location a great experience even for the non-surfer. Water temperature can drop under 10 degrees and it is usually crowded on the weekend.

Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay is located a 20 minute walk away from Llandadno and only works when Llandadno is close-out. Usually there are rather short lefts, but sometimes perfect barrels…

Hout Bay

Small, short waves. Rather leave it and check Long Beach!!

Dungeons

Dungeons is the big wave spot where Red Bull have their Big Wave Africa Event. But you need a boat and good lungs, since the wave breaks on a reef which is far outside. It works from 8 foot up. Guys have surfed it up to 30 foot!!!

The Hoek

The Hoek is right beneath the spectacular Chapmanspeak drive. The waves seem to literally pile up at the outside reef and if everything fits together you will be blessed with perfect barrels. The Hoek works in south east winds.

Nordhoek Beach

Nordhoek Beach is a long beach going from the chapmanspeak to Kommetjie. There are many peaks of different quality: Some are nearly perfect!

Dunes

Dunes is still a little secret spot. You walk about 20-30 minutes along Nordhoek Beach. At the left end of the beach you will find the spot. It is so deep in the bay, that the wave has to turn almost 180 degrees, before it breaks as a awesome left barrel and finally closes out in the shorebreak. Best with light south east winds. Competitions are held there regularly.

Sunset

Sunset is the reef left of Long Beach. There are very often huge waves and the local big wave crew is tow-in surfing them. A boat and big balls are essential.

Long Beach

Long Beach is extremely popular, especially on the weekends when it becomes too crowded. Waves turn around on the kelp covered reef, break on the inside, creating nice and long rides. There are several peaks. The left peak is usually better. Even the not so skilled surfers will enjoy it here. In the beachbreak you can get a small insight of the green room, before it slams on you. Long Beach is one of the few spots on this cost, that also works in south westerly winds. The south east though is perfect, if not too strong.

Boneyards

Boneyards is the first spot on the outer reef of Kommetjie. You will see it from the street but do not underestimate its size. Boneyards works in 6 feet up and can be a lot bigger. You take off in the middle of kelp. The left is short, but awesome!!!!

Inner Kom

Small pointbreak, in the middle of kelp and never bigger than 3’ but fast and powerful!

Outer Kom

Legendary big wave spot on the outer reef. The point/reef break is powerful runs over kelp. In off-shore winds and huge swell it creates gigantic waves of best quality!!!

Caution: Reef and kelp!

Crayfish Factory

The Crayfish Factory is the most surfed big wave spot with a lot of tales surrounding it. Directly in front of the Crayfish Factory righthander are breaking from 8 feet on over the kelp-covered reef. Waves at the factory can get as big as 15 feet, throwing a huge and powerful lip.

There is an enormous suction and when you start to paddle for your take-off and suddenly see how the water disappears in front and underneath you. You fall all the way from the lip. If you don’t make it, you will meet with the kelp forcefully by virtue of the full power of the wave crashing down on you which is followed by the rest of the sets breaking on your head. When you get back up, you are in the channel.

If you make the drop, you’ll have the ride of your life in front of a gigantic wall of water. When it’s big, the waves make a thundering sound as the thick lip crashes down.

Whitsands

The sandbars in front of Witsand are very shifty. There is however usually always a small wave running. In a strong north west or small swell it may be the only spot working.

Misty Cliffs

Between Kommetjie and Scarborough is Misty Cliffs. The sandbars are hit by plenty of swell. It is good in small to head high, clean swell.

Scarborough Beach

Here are two breaks, one in the middle of the bay the other one on right side of the bay. They are ride hand breaks and very powerful.

Dunkin Bay

Long lefthand pointbreak! Only works in a huge winter swell!

Garbage Dumps

At this spot there are basically two waves: a slow, right pointbreak with a steep, long face and a left, that needs big swell to built up and usually ends on a stony reef. The seagrass and kelp make this spot a little spooky.

Elandy Bay

Elands Bay is a world class spot (according to ZIG ZAG) and SA’s best left: J-Bay on the Westcoast!

The swell is winding around the rocky, kelp covered point and runs, and runs, and runs! The stronger the off-shore winds, the faster the wave! Take off is steep and radical! The first section needs a lot of speed! But you can also begin the ride about 20 to 30 meters down the line and enjoy the easy part of the wave.

Heaven and Hell

…is a spot with two waves: Heaven and Hell! Hell is a left point, is wild and in huge swell a small wave. Heaven is a right than runs for 80 meters at least and has a first class tube section! Starts to work at 6 feet! Caution: Fat Lip! Big Ball’s only!

Yzerfontein

In off shore or calm winds, there is a long wave occasionally, depending on the sandbars the wave is slow, fast, hollow and sometimes close-out.

Schaap Eiland

This spot is right next to Yzerfontein. Sometimes very chaotic and lots of paddling but: Picks up heaps of Swell!!!

Kreefte Reef

In head-high swell and low tide there breaks a short, but steep and powerful wave.
