Platboom Beach is located in the middle of Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Right around the corner from Cape Point, the most south-westerly point of Africa.
The water is glassy, waves are often than not huge when there is nowhere else. Windsurfing becomes so exciting here at the Cape of Storms. Platboom is not only popular due to the exquisite landscape, but in addition due to the celebrated jumping and waveriding conditions. It’s forever changing too owing to the position of banks and the tide thus making it quite a challenging spot.
To enter the water is a little bit tricky. You have to surf out from a tiny beach between rocks on either side. Downwind is a bigger sandy beach (Bozo beach) where you can exit the in case you break a mast or run into difficulties.
Scarborough Point
Scarborough, a point-break over a kelp-covered reef works from 3,5m upwards.
For many, Scarborough is the place to be for Big-Wave riding. The waves are often mast high and higher.
It is excellent for waveriding but beware, on the inside the wind is totally offshore and therefore it can be tricky to get back to the safety of the relatively small beach. If you time your aerial too late, you can scrap your stuff of the rocks!
Whitsands
Witsands is side-on and perfect for jumping. Depending on the tide the outside is break can be a closeout. Still a great spot, especially for the advanced windsurfer in small to logo high waves.
Milnerton Lighthouse
This spot is deep inside Table bay. The waves are somewhat smaller than at Sunset Beach. Wind is side-off. The small break is very clean and not as fast as sunset - great as introduction into waveriding.
Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is the classic under the city spots of Cape Town. The wave-size ranges between one meter and one meter above mast. The spot is a Dorado for Waverider. The southeaster is slightly offshore, which keeps the face steep.
Rides are extremely fast, down the line and sometimes unbelievably long. Great for big aerials! If you have someone to pick you up, you can go 4km downwind in great waves.
Big Bay
No other spots combines so many features like Big Bay: Huge parking lot, small shop, toilets, a grass area to rig and plenty of people on the beach to watch you do your moves. A good place for posers.
Wind is slightly onshore and it is celebrated for jumping. If other spots get out of control, Big Bay may still ride-able. Great for wave beginners as well. Usually your choice of sail will be slightly bigger than sunset. Only if Sunset is too offshore, take the same sail size in Big Bay with perfect sideshore winds.
Haakgat
When the wind is perfect side-shore and the swell size bigger than normal, Haagkat’s mammoth waves give you a very long clean ride.
Sometimes the breaks are very hollow and create excellent ramps for those B I G Air’s. Beware the shorebreak can be extremely high and drop you and your gear on the beach in a very expensively agonizing manner. Additionally there is a strong rip close to the beach. The reef, on which the waves break are covered in kelp, bringing panic to ones eyes, when you lay in front of a monster wave and due to lack of wind are struggling to get back on your board.
Best conditions in Haagkat are at high tide and enormous swell. Epic for waveriding. Locals call it SA’s Hookipa.
Melkbos
10 minute drive away from Table View, there is the wide and huge Van Riebeeck beach, locally known as Melkbos.
So named after the town right next to the beach. Waves are running in sets. You can choose your own wave as wave sizes differ depending on the sandbars, tide and swell size.
For many, this is the best in the Table bay. Wind is predominantly sideshore and it is suitable for both jumping and waveriding alike.
The wind usually picks up in the afternoon, and the wave size is usually a meter higher than Sunset.
Best sets normally run at low tide.
Yzer Fontain
When you have to rig your 3,5 m2 sail in the Table bay, you will find awesome conditions here for your 4,5 m2 or 5 m2 sail. Waves in front of the sandy beach are usually much higher than in the table bay, but the break is mostly harmless and quite predicable - perfect for waveriding.
When the swell is big, the wave breaks over the whole bay, starting in the left corner and running as a point break along the beach – Just bottom turn after bottom turn.
With a little luck you’ll be fortunate enough to get one of these unforgettable classic days at Yzerfontein.
Langebaan
Langebaan is located about 80 km north of Table View. The warm water of the lagoon is inviting for beginners to advanced windsurfers and kitesurfers – even in your boardshorts if you proficient and brave. Beginners and Freestylers will find it a perfect training spot. Sometimes, small waves make their way to the lagoon and allow you to get an introduction to wavesailing.
