cape town is known as a gourmet destination for quite a while now. should you wish to treat yourself to an awesome meal prepared by some of the best chefs on the block - here our favorites. we won't mention the top of the list as they are way out of our budget to even come close to:

  • chefs warehouse on bree street - no reservations, first come first serve. cool spot for lunch

  • chefs warehouse on beau constantia on constantia nek- relaxed vinyard atmosphere, same menu as on bree street

  • foxcroft, constantia (extraordinary food - belongs to the la colombe group)

  • shortmarket club on shortmarket street (in the hands of luke dale roberts)

  • homespun in tableview is our best little gourmet temple close to the hostel (approx. ZAR 230 for a main

  • newly opened "our place" (former melissas) as freshly baked bread every morning. get a coffee and pastry for ZAR 40

  • if you come hungry, try blouberg cafe at 20 stadler road. right on the beach on your way to big bay. perfect for the late sleepers as they serve breakfast all day

  • cattle baron - an old time favorite with our guests for that proper steak

  • blowfish - fish restaurant with a view right on dolphin beach kite spot

  • primi piatti for that carb fix - pasta - in huge portions

  • col'cacchio for great pizza and super delicious salads

  • forneria - for the true italian experience

grocery shopping

on a budget

  • your best value for money to do your groceries will be food lovers market. check for their specials regularly. you might be able to grab a box of pineapples (10 pineapples) for 30-40 Rand or a box of avo's for the same price. share it among you to get the best out of it

  • the OZCF market at granger bay is now also open sundays not only on saturdays. buy fresh organic produce - get great deals for food if you go there before they close at 14.00

  • elgin free range chicken have their factory outlet (only frozen meat available) in parklands

  • buy your freshest fresh fish at cape fish - a fish wholesaler  in paarden eiland (the industrial on your way to town) that has recently opened a little factory shop. expect to pay from ZAR 17 to ZAR 39 (norwegan salmon)for 100g of fish

  • clean, ethical, sustainable meat available at frankie fenner meat merchants on 143 sir lowry road in woodstock

  • plastic free and organic shopping at shop zero in woodstock, nude foods in zonnebloem and low impact living in glencairn on the other side of the mountain
